Birdies of a Feather Flock Students Together

My Students

Our school opened 28 years ago in a rural setting and the students were much more naturally active. Single-family homes and apartments have sprung up around our school in the past decades.

My 7th and 8th grade Physical Education students are transitioning from elementary school where they were more active.

We service a diverse population but they have in common the trend of being sedentary. We have noticed in our Physical Education department that the student population’s body mass index is much higher than in past years which could be due to the Covid quarantine and lack of physically going to school over the past two years. Now that we have them back in school, we see the need to encourage physical activity more than ever.

My Project

Badminton is a favorite activity at our junior i high school and students really enjoy playing with friends during PE class. Also, during intramurals at lunch we have a full gym of students. Students who don’t play more common sports are really intrigued with badminton so it interests many of our students. Students move and don’t realize they are exercising and badminton is a sport they will be able to play into adulthood and with their families. The social aspect of badminton is invaluable. Watching students laugh and talk during play is so rewarding.
