I teach 2nd grade in Chadbourn, North Carolina. We are a low wealth school with the majority of our students eating free or reduced lunch. Our school received a grant from UTOTES (Utilizing the Outdoors to Teach Experimental Science.) We are very excited about this program and what it will mean to our children. We hope to instill in them a love of the outdoors and a respect for all of nature. This program is enabling us to provide for our students hands on experiences with nature. We will begin to create a bird watching area on our campus during our March UTOTES session. The children are excited because they will actually get to help us pull weeds, dig in the dirt and plant trees and bushes in this area. Their one big question is "How are we going to get close enough to actually see the birds and watch them"? I have found some sturdy, safe plastic student binoculars which I know would help my students have the learning experiences I want for them. I have 22 students and would love for each one to have a pair to use as we observe and learn from the activity of the birds. UTOTES has provided many books and posters on the birds in our area and the students are anxious to watch them up close . We hope to create another learning area on campus next year (probably a butterfly garden). So you see, these binoculars will definitely be put to good use. I appreciate your help in making this experience more meaningful to my students.
