The 8th Grade Leadership Development Program at Northwest Cabarrus Middle School is an initiative designed to provide leadership opportunities for motivated students, many of them minority students. Our PTSO recently donated several picnic tables so that our students and faculty can have an outside eating and learning area. We would like to expand this to create a landscaped bird and butterfly habitat to enhance the natural environment both for us and the wildlife.
We have enlisted the help of the agricultural students at the neighboring high school. We would need landscaping plants, shrubs, and flowers that attract birds and butterflies, as well as provide protection during the winter. We also would like to incorporate several water features, either a pond (depending on funds) or stationary bird baths. For all the feeding needs, we would need thistle, sunflower, mixed seed, and suet feeders to offer a variety of food for all the different bird diets. This project would be a major undertaking for our Leadership Group.
There are 25 students in the group, and they all have been involved in the planning, design, and ground breaking process. They will also be actively involved in the planting and maintenance of the bird habitat.
Once this project is complete, it will give our school a beautiful area that all students and faculty will be able to enjoy. Our school is an older building, very stark and plain, without much landscaping to break up the brick and pavement. This area would become a bright spot--a centerpiece to use for lunches, meetings, free time, and extended classroom activity.
