Our school, Cameron Park Elementary, in Hillsborough, North Carolina, just celebrated its 50th birthday on April 22, 2006. We had many fun and educational activities. There were games, food, music, historical reenactments, and many other special events going on throughout the day.
We also celebrated many unique assets on our campus. Some of these include Hughes Academy (one room school house, circa 1864); an Arboretum (circa 1860); a newly reconstructed Ice House (circa 1856); and The Old Halifax Road (circa 1786).
Our day also included an author "Meet and Greet," including 18 authors and various artists. Parents, faculty members, and community members worked hard for about a year to plan our 50th anniversary celebration. As a school we wanted to showcase our local talents and the special features that our campus and community have to offer.
The Arboretum located on our campus displays a variety of unique trees. Some of these include a China Fir, an American Holly, Douglas Fir, and Japanese Cedar, all dating back to the 1850's. We are writing this grant in hopes that we can get bird feeders for our campus. We have many bird houses (built by local high school students) that house birds year round. By adding bird feeders we hope to be of more support to the wildlife on our campus.
Our class of first graders will be involved with this bird feeder project. They will help assemble and hang the feeders throughout the campus. This grant would allow us to further engage students in wildlife (especially birds) as well as helping animals.
