Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help us understand protein chemistry! I teach biotechnology to juniors and seniors at a school with an urban population that has many needs. I try and make my room a warm inviting space where science can be learned. Most of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch--and they are in dire need of up to date supplies.

Given the financial situation in California, we have access to few resources. Currently we do not have the materials to study protein chemistry in our biotechnology course. Although we have enough for DNA (thanks Donors Choose!) the "second half" of biotechnology is the study of protein. We need specialized equipment to do this.

The essential materials are vertical gel boxes that can be used to separate proteins from each other. Once we have those, we need the chemicals and reagents to see the protein. This helps the students in two ways--first, by letting them visualize the protein and separate it, and second by further training them in a real job skill. Our school is in the San Francisco bay area, where numerous biotech companies are based.

If you donate, you will unlock another aspect of the amazing field of biotechnology to students who otherwise would have no access. Your gift will make an enormous difference in teaching science to these kids!!
