Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our program, students self-select as they have an interest in learning more about healthcare careers.
They are a delightful mixture of personalities, social, economic and racial backgrounds but all have a commitment to learning.
These interests range from becoming a medical assistant to a pediatric oncologist - yet they have limited exposure to the amazing plethora of careers available in this field. In our 3 year program, it is our mission to expand their horizons and future possibilities. In addition their skill set is just as varied so we provide a variety of experiences with most of them being brains in and hands on !
My Project
In our classroom we read, write and do our best to experiment with ideas central to Health Science and Biotechnology. However to actually get hands-on experience with authentic equipment being guided and hosted by working scientists make this field trip a real boost to have our students become enamored with STEM-related careers and colleges.
Hands on experience with gel electrophoresis, cell culture and experimenting with nematodes and tardigrades are what we have planned with the resident scientists at the Buck Institute.
These are experiences impossible to create in a public school classroom yet are a mainstay of the Biotech industry.
Students will also get to tour the facility, view specimens and interact with technology such as Dual Zoom Dissecting Microscope and the confocal laser scanning microscopy. We hope to enlighten students to how accessible scientists are as well as science- since the BUCK will be offering scholarships to our students for their upcoming programs.
Although only 40 can be managed on site, my students will create mini labs and scenarios to share with our Biotech 1 students- which will no doubt entice them to continue in our 3-year pathway!
