Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are hardworking, bright, young individuals. They attend school each and every day, ready to learn, and meet all high expectations. My students love challenges and face difficulties each and every day with smiles on their faces. My students come from a Title I school with a high population of English learners. Most come from a low-income household and have limited resources and experiences. To many of my students, their only chance of life-enriching activities are at school. They love school and I want to make this place the most enriching place for them!
My Project
Nothing captures the wonder of a child like bright, blinking lights. Growing up in California, my students don't get to quite discover the joy and wonder of seeing the blinking lightning bugs all around in the summer evenings. But just because they aren't easily spotted or seen, doesn't mean that they do not exist! There are several bioluminescent insects, and in fact a new species of bioluminescent insect that were discovered in California just about a year ago, by an undergrad student, no less! My students will be learning through a project based environment where they will be assigned the task of identifying, researching, and creating a bioluminescent species, using the Chibitronic Love to Code kit!
I wish for my students to find the wonder and beauty in nature through the use of new technology and project based learning!
Students will be asked to identify their desired insect species and collaboratively create their research presentation slides and paper, using plenty of photos and videos to show examples of their luminating insects! They'll also be encouraged to find an expert to interview through skype to gain more knowledge. During this time, students will identify their way in which their insects create their biolumincence and try to mimic the pattern using LED lights, copper tape, and Love to Code kit. The ability to code the lights will help students to be accurate in the timing in which the insect will blink on and off.
My hope is that with combining technology with the bioluminescent insects project will kickstart students' interest branching out into the bioluminescent entomology field of science. Students will be ready to be our next generation researchers, inventors, and discoverers of our creepy crawly natural world!
