Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My classroom is not a typical science classroom. I am always looking for ways to further engage my students with the limited resources we have. My students never spend a class period staying seated and quiet; they are always moving around using hands-on activities.
My students are mostly 9th graders and are 97% Latino and 96% economically disadvantaged living in Dallas, TX.
Because of the low funding at our school and the surrounding middle schools and elementary schools, many of my students have never experienced an interactive classroom where they can learn using all of their senses. My students have a lot of energy and are excited about learning but have a hard time learning by sitting in their seats and listening to their teacher lecture. My students require many different modes of learning when learning tricky biology concepts, and benefit greatly from hands-on learning.
My Project
At my school, paper and copies are hard to come by because the one copier for over 2,000 students is often broken and teachers are not provided with paper for their classroom. Printers are not provided for every teacher, and if they are, teachers must buy their own toner. Because of this, I am limited on the amount of activities I can do, specifically with lamination and manipulatives. The alternative to paper I use is personal whiteboard, but the dry erase markers go quickly and are very expensive to replace out of pocket. Through this project, I will be able to provide my students with hard copies of assignments they can write on, laminated colored copies of manipulatives using the colored printer that will help them learn Biology concepts and visualize how their own bodies work, and my students will be able to demonstrate their learning through writing on personal whiteboards.
These supplies will make a difference in my students' learning because they will be able to utilize more of their senses in order to learn biology concepts and visualize what is going on in their own bodies and the world around them.
This will bring my students one step closer to graduation, as they have to pass the Biology EOC to graduate, and in turn, go to college.
