I am a second grade teacher at a Title one school in Brownsville, Brooklyn. I teach all subjects from literacy and math to social studies and science. This year, I would like to offer my students an exemplar biology program ranging from the study of bugs and insects to amphibians and plants...and animals of course. Students get really excited to have different creatures around the classroom as they are a huge learning stimuli for them. I would also like to incorporate an ant farm and a ladybug lantern as well as a lizard and a hermit crab for a study on the variations of living environments. Last year I did a unit on bugs and one assignment was to try and catch and bring in a bug for the class to study. We got a few roaches and a moth. It was great though, and the children's excitement has propelled me to invest further in these areas of study. There is truly nothing like the excitement of a child about something so small as a household bug to really motivate a teacher. These types of creatures really are not ordinary to a classroom and it not only improves the environment for the children, but also motivates them to search for knowledge and more importantly to experience the discovery of knowledge in a step by step process that will aid them in the future to become independent learners. Thank you for your interest in this project and I hope you will consider investing in our classroom and our kids!
