My Students

My students are a mix of freshmen, sophomores and juniors in Biology and IB Biology classes. Students at my school come from a diverse background and academic levels and interests. Our school has a strong sense of community which extends to the local community; biology students can often be found volunteering in the local community in a variety of service and science focused activities.

My students and I love hands-on learning as it provides opportunities to apply their learning and examine topics in detail.

We try to spend as much of our class time as possible investigating topics in details through labs, simulations, or investigations. My students also love the marine ecosystems in my classroom, particularly Nemo and Dori.

My Project

The requested extraction and amplification kits will be used to help teach students many of the new and exciting techniques used in biology, particularly biotechnology and genetic engineering. These are fields that will continue to be more common and used in society.

Providing students hands-on opportunities to learn proper scientific procedures and knowledge about these fields is a great opportunity.

The lab kits requested will allow students to conduct DNA extraction from themselves, the amplification of DNA via Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR), and determination of their genotype via gel electrophoresis. Students will discover their ability to compare their phenotype by tasting a chemical (PTC) to their genotype, thus examining their own DNA!

The fields of biotechnology and genetic engineering are rapidly becoming more important in today's society. Providing students a chance to experience these topics first hand will introduce them to new career paths, areas of study, and applications of science.
