I work in a small school in a very rural community. Many of my students struggle to attain even the most basic school supplies. This lack of financial stability in our community has a huge impact on our schools.
However, the financial hardships my students' experience don't hamper their enthusiasm for learning.
Much of our student population recognizes education as their ticket to a better future, and I want to help them reach as many of their goals as possible.
My Project
Every year I have my students research a person of interest for a biography project. They usually choose someone from history, make a PowerPoint and a timeline, and present them to the class. The trouble is, they often end up choosing the same people over and over, and many students will end up presenting on the same person. This year I would like to avoid that.
I want my students to have the opportunity to choose from a wide variety of biographies on people they have actually heard of and are interested in learning about.
I want this project to be an engaging opportunity for them to learn about someone they are genuinely interested in while practicing skills related to summarizing, quoting, and basic comprehension.
Throughout the years my selection of nonfiction books has really dwindled, and this would be a great way to revamp my classroom library while also ensuring that our upcoming project is an interesting one the kids will love!
