My Students
I teach Language Arts to 150 sixth and seventh graders every day. I teach at a middle school in a rural setting. The diversity in my school is more socioeconomic than racial or cultural. They are curious, intelligent young people that need to be pushed to read non-fiction. I have kids who live in trailer parks, farms, middle class, and homes that range from $500,000 and beyond. At times the differences in their life experiences can make it a challenge to find common ground, but we work hard to give the kids shared experiences.
My Project
My kids will be learning about people that aren't usually in their history books. Poets, libririans, pilots, scientists, law enforcement officers, singers, etc. I have tried to find biographies that represent as many different cultures as possible.
I will go through each book briefly to give them an overview of each book. The students will get to pick which book they want to read. The students will read the book then do a one pager. One pagers are a creative way to express what they learned from the book using quotes and images.
After the kids do their one pagers, they will get in literature circles to share their books with each other. I could even see extending this to having my students go over to one of the elementary schools that is near us to share their biography with them.
