Our school is mostly made up of students who are living in poverty. They are wonderful children who need opportunities to see themselves as bright capable people. Many of our students do not see themselves in a position to have future careers or become professionals. As a school, we try many things to empower these young learners to see themselves as important and to see their own potential. Our students are in need of continuous reminders of how awesome they are.
My Project
I am asking for a set of biographies for my kindergarten class. These biographies are written as comic books at a kindergarten and first grade interest level. We do not have many nonfiction books that are written at a kindergarten level and we have no biographies at all. I think it is important for my students to see what is possible for a person to accomplish. They need to see the possibilities in life and what they may strive to accomplish. The biographies include Jackie Robinson, Albert Einstein, Rosa Parks and George Washington to name a few. I plan to do a mini lessons on each of them to explore each famous person more in-depth. I truly think my kindergarteners will really enjoy these books!
