My Project

Biodiversity combines the words biological diversity into one word. Biodiversity describes the variety of life on Earth, comprising the variety within a species (genetic diversity) and between species, as well as the variety within and between ecosystems. All life depends on other forms of life. It’s this diversity of life that helps maintain the health of the environment.

Students learn best through hands-on activities and play.

By playing "Biodiversity Jenga" students can see the concepts in food web ecology and show how ecosystems become less stable as species go extinct. Each brick has a different picture of a plant, insect, bird, or mammal on it and these are stacked to make a tower representing an ecosystem.

Players take turns removing bricks, providing the opportunity to talk about the ecological role of individual species within the ecosystem, and whether they are threatened with extinction. As the game progresses, the tower becomes less and less stable as more bricks are removed—a demonstration of the current state of nature. Although plants and animals are still present, the continued loss of species and their interactions with each other makes the ecosystem more and more fragile. And, as everyone knows, ultimately the whole thing will come crashing down.

Playing this game helps explain biodiversity in a fun and exciting way.
