Bio Orb: Growing A Self-Contained Terrarium Ecosystem

Help me give my students an opportunity to establish a self-contained biological terrarium for study in class.

My Students

I teach sixth through eighth grade general and special education alternative school students with varying levels of needs. Along with another teacher and an instructional aide, we share one large space and teach all subjects.

My students attend our Personalized Alternative Learning School, or PALS for short.

Not only is our goal to teach our students how to be independent students again, but to keep them interested in learning so that when they leave our school, they can perform well in their classes.

My Project

In my classroom, I try to establish hands-on and observable examples for my students. They need concrete details to view in order to learn best.

I will provide my students an opportunity to keep track of a mini terrestrial ecosystem by setting up a self-contained Bio Orb.

The system maintains its water and light levels. The students will have to monitor plant and insect population growth, as they learn about plant science, light and water cycle, as well as air circulation.

The Bio Orb is a truly fantastic project which is going to catch on quickly in other classrooms.
