I teach at a fairly homogeneous school near the beach. Most of my students are first and second generation Americans who have grown up in this close-knit community. It is an interesting challenge to bridge experiences regarding cultural, social and economic diversity that enhance the students' perspectives of what it means to be a part of the American story.
How to broaden student knowledge of the diversity of thought, experiences, and culture?
I am concerned that if students do not have diversity in either their school or community it may be easier for misunderstandings and misconceptions to occur. My students need to know about the many strengths and complexities that make up modern American Society.
This is the 3rd year of using Reading Workshop for the students Literature experience. As I look at genres, I realize that the often overlooked genres of adventure, mystery and suspense are not well represented in my current classroom library. This grant is a to increase choice of selections in these genres.Books that have adventure storylines are The Night Dairy; EngNerds, Home of the Brave, and Space Case. Suspense stories include The Lifters, the Science of Breakable Things and See You in the Cosmos. The Mystery Collection will have two new additions The Peculiar Incident on Shady Street and The Perfect Score.
The students love these adventure-suspense novels and I had a hard time keeping them on the shelf.
Having books that children choose to read make instill an eagerness to engage in the reading, discussing and writing with academic rigor. It is a remarkably exciting way to teach and learn. It will be wonderful to give the students more opportunities of selection across genres.
