Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My fifth graders are a very energetic, hard-working, multi-talented, varied learning-styled group who love hands-on learning. Many of them are first and second generation immigrants from Central and South America and Asia. Our school is located in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York. Many of my students speak a language other than English at home. They are always looking for the next great book series or original graphic novel to hit the classroom bookshelves. The more titles with a range of characters, the richer their reading lives are!
My Project
All it takes is one incredible character, story line or author to hook a reader for life! Whether it’s Hermione Granger at Hogwarts or an animal who faces great challenges, students need to be exposed to a wide range of reading experiences.
Being able to put any book a kid is interested in, into our classroom library is one of, if not my absolute greatest privileges as an educator.
This project is my students’ wishlist- they’ve been charting book requests for a month or two, leading to this project and making their book wishes come true in just a matter of time!
