Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 8th-grade cluster is made up of students from a wide variety of backgrounds. In my district close to 60% of students receive free or reduced lunch, this means that many do not have the basic supplies that we take for granted.
Like all 8th graders, my kids love to create and explore.
They are most invested in their own learning when they have a hand in creating the assignment.
Connecting math, science and art is so important and helps kids explore the concepts on a deeper level.
My Project
My students will use the comb binder to make math resource books each unit. Each unit will begin with the students designing their own cover with anything they can find or know on the unit topic. For example, if the unit is rational numbers, they might drawn a real number diagram or anything they feel relates to the topic.
This preview activity will help them get excited about the unit and allow them to relate to the unit in their own way!
This will give them some ownership in the unit.
Each student will then make their very own math resource book using the comb binder and supplies. Throughout the unit, the students will add drawings, notes and their ideas to their math resource book. With the help of their imagination, teacher notes and foldable the students will design a math book that is relatable and usable for years to come.
