Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach students ages 10-15 with a variety of health, intellectual, sensory, and physical disabilities. The majority of my students are non-native English speakers, and we are a Title I (high poverty) school which adds additional layers of challenge they must overcome daily. My students all read below grade level, and we have been working hard to set rigorous, high goals for them.
My students all desire to reach their full potential, and I know that being able to read on level or close to grade level is key to them being successful in all of their classes, as well as life.
Since my students are behind their peers, we have set goals to grow at least two grade levels in reading this year in order to "double time" their progress. I am the only resource room English and Reading teacher in my school. My personal motivation is that if I have students all three years of middle school, even if they start at a kindergarten reading level in sixth grade, they will be at a place at the end of middle school where they can go out and thrive independently in the world.
My Project
My students are in middle school and are struggling readers. I lead a very structured classroom in which students maximize instructional time by going to rotations. In their small group rotation, they work with me and a few peers on grade-level standards. I provide the individualized instruction they need to fill in the gaps in their knowledge. At computers, they work on a computer-based reading intervention program that helps them gain the reading skills they need to increase their scores. At independent reading rotation, they read a book on their level either with an audiobook reading it out loud to them or by themselves. Our rotations are run like a well-oiled machine, with students moving from group to group seamlessly on a timer. Since our class has so many moving parts, it is essential that students remain organized.
Keeping supplies organized is key to our classroom running smoothly, ensuring we maximize the time students need to become better readers.
Each students' binder has four sections- data, skills, vocabulary, and reactions. I have enough binder divider tabs for the next few years, but I need more binders for students to keep their work. Binders are kept in the classroom, and I reuse them year after year, so your contribution will help more than just this year's and next year's students. We use the binders to store student materials and progress. Being able to quickly access student materials with the assistance of organized binders ensures that more time is spent learning and less time is spent finding work.
