Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are located in a low socioeconomic area where 83% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. There is a large population of Spanish speaking students who receive bilingual services. However, there is a growing population of Portuguese speaking students who do not have access to equal services since there insufficient students to open bilingual classrooms across the grade levels.
Because of this need, it is my responsibility as a Bilingual Portuguese Mathematics teacher to work with my students in achieving mastery in their grade level while assisting in developing their English-speaking skills.
My students range from grades four through eight. This requires me to have a variety of tools to suit the needs of my students.
My Project
Change is not always easy. Coming to a new country and being unable to communicate requires many types of adjustments for a Bilingual student. However the biggest adjustment is when a child walks into school. The students now has to face the fact that he or she is in a new environment and is desperate to find someone who can communicate with them. Trying to fit in, trying to begin to learn curricula that are in a foreign language, and sometimes, just hoping to go unnoticed, especially in the middle school, is a Bilingual student's goal for the day.
Keeping my bilingual Portuguese students focused and motivated to learn is my biggest goal.
I do not want my students to feel that, since they are unable to speak in English, they are unable to continue with their education. Providing them with tools that can make Mathematics hands-on and more engaging is needed. The English will come with time, but it is absolutely necessary to ensure that the students continue on their content-related road. There is no reason for a Bilingual student to fall behind because of a language barrier. All we need is to provide them with the best teachers and tools available and they will soar!
