Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 5th Graders at WES, a Title 1 (low income) public elementary school in Austin, Tx. It is ironic that in one of the most tech friendly cities in the United States today, there are still children here who have never used technology. My students come from families where technology use is severely limited and many cannot afford to have internet connection at home. Therefore, school is the only place where my students can really interact with technology and learn how to research, create, and display ideas online. Also, many of my students are Spanish-speaking and differentiating assignments in Science can be difficult using only printed worksheets, but with e-reader technology and connected software, I can differentiate in a flash and support students in Spanish. That way no student gets lost or frustrated by a lack of understanding. Science and technology are intricately linked and by using tablets, we can make that connection even more exciting for them. On top of all of this, being able to manipulate technology to discover new ideas is essential as students grow into adults. They need to be technologically literate in order to be marketable in the future.
My Project
The KingPad tablets will be used by each student in 5th Grade for the purposes of bettering their understanding of science, through e-readers and online experiments.
Our goal is to put a tablet in each child's hand and teach them how to create projects, share ideas, and collaborate with each other effectively through scientific inquiry.
Such skills will not only support them in 5th Grade, but far beyond into their adult lives. Some do not believe they will ever need technology. I want to show them the essential nature of technology in everyday life and give them opportunities to discover how technology can better their lives.
