Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 20 wonderful smiling, friendly faces that greet me every day! My students are hungry for knowledge, and they are very eager to learn. I teach for the largest school district in Oklahoma.
My school is high-poverty and 100% of our students receive free lunch and breakfast.
My students love to talk, share, and are very social. They like to learn in a way that is meaningful and fun for them. The majority of my students are English Language Learners and have never had a positive interaction with reading. Despite the poverty, they work hard and are constantly trying to learn more and more. They are great and always appreciate anything that is given to them to help them learn.
My Project
Our class is diverse and so much fun! Most of my students come from immigrant homes and English is their second language. I am asking for your help to purchase bilingual books for our classroom library.
Children connect to books and have ownership of their learning when they see themselves reflected in the books they read.
When the children can see themselves reflected in their classroom they are more willing to engage and take ownership of their learning making their education more meaningful. As a child of immigrant parents I am able to connect with my students and understand their first language. I constantly translate our English books for them to ensure they have a complete understanding of the wonderful stories that we read every single day but these books would open up so many doors for us! These books would allow for my students to see themselves represented and shared with the world. Please consider helping my students!
