Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine learning how to read without books? My bilingual kindergarten students are expected to learn how to read by the end of this school year but they do not have the appropriate books to begin their journey.
I have an amazing bilingual kindergarten class full of children who are eager and ready to start reading.
Most of the instruction is in the students' native language, Spanish, to help them build a foundation to make an easier transition to English language. They currently attend a public school in the South Bronx, NY with very little resources to help them achieve their academic goals.
My Project
I am requesting Spanish emergent reading books, Spanish picture books and a Spanish magazine subscription. My goal is to build a library with appropriate reading materials for this group of students. These materials are essential for my students to learn how to read.
At this present moment the few Spanish emergent books I have in my classroom are black and white copies of books I made myself.
My goal is to make reading fun and exciting for my students but with black and white copies of emergent books this goal is close to impossible. Providing students with the appropriate reading materials in their native language will not only speed their learning process but it will also make reading an exciting part of their day.
