Bilingual Literacy Opportunities for All

Help me give my students the opportunity to read books in their first language and teach their classmates Spanish vocabulary by comparing Spanish and English versions of popular picture books and graphic novels.

My Project

I teach first grade at our STEM Academy in Idaho. In addition to being a STEM school, we are an EL Magnet School, which serves sixty plus students learning the English language. I have two students in my classroom who are new to the country this year, and arrived with literacy skills in Spanish, but little to no exposure to the English language. I would love to provide the opportunity for these students and many others within our school, to read books in their primary language as we also read them in English. This will help develop a love of reading, as well as help them to grasp English vocabulary in a fun and meaningful way. I plan to house these books in our school library where students can check them out as needed, so that the entire school will benefit.
