This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have a bright and beautiful group of 24 incredible children in our two way Spanish dual immersion program. They spend the day with me learning entirely in Spanish with the goal of leaving 5th grade as confident bilingual and biliterate learners who can read, write, and speak confidently in two languages. We are a Title I school and the majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Half of the students in my class are native Spanish speakers and the other half are acquiring Spanish as a second language.

My students come to me with a natural curiosity and excitement around learning, and I facilitate experiences to allow them to reach their limitless potential.

I consider it a huge honor to be their teacher and do not accept this responsibility lightly. I recognize that our school system is not set up to support and nurture our urban youth of color, and I am grateful to build a community that wraps our arms around our students and families to do so.

My Project

Many years ago, I had family engagement backpacks that could be sent home with students for them to play games similar to what we were playing in the classroom with their families. I actually left those at the last school that I taught them and see that Lakeshore has them again. Funding this project would allow me to have 8 backpacks again for my students to take home and use ranging from addition to subtraction to shapes to measurement and more. Since these are bilingual backpacks in both Spanish and English, they will be accessible to all of my families and help with language acquisition and practice in both languages! In addition to these backpacks, I am also asking for sensory floor tiles and other creative blocks and art materials to enhance different projects that we do in our classroom.

After all, don't you all remember kindergarten as one of the most magical and exciting times in your school life?
