Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at Wellstone International High School. It is a school that caters to new to the country immigrants, most of whom have limited formal education. My students are amazing and their hunger for learning is incomparable. Please support this project so that they can have access to authentic materials.
I work with beginning ESL students who are the best students a teacher could have.
A great majority of them have limited or formal education. These students have spent some time in refugee camps or have been living in rural settings where there wasn't much access to education. My students come to class with funds of knowledge and I learn from them as much as they learn from me.
My Project
My students will use these materials to help them become responsible for their own learning. They have learned the academic skill of alphabetization and have become sufficient in finding the information on their own. Unfortunately most Somali dictionaries are not mass produced and each one costs 30 to 40 dollars. This project will enable me to provide my students with a tool that can enhance their vocabulary acquisition and comprehension.
Donations will improve my classroom, because it would provide my students with authentic materials where they can use their native language to support their second language acquisition.
