Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." Jacqueline Kennedy said this, but it resonates within my classroom. My students need books to open up their worlds and encourage their love of reading.
My students are bilingual 4th grade students.
They attend public school in a large urban school district. Access to resources and reading material can sometimes be a challenge for them. Many of them are first-generation immigrants from Mexico and other parts of Latin America. Their families are mostly Spanish-speaking, working-class parents. This makes reading in English in the classroom even more important.
My students are determined, hard-workers who have come so far in their education this year. They have BIG personalities and they make me laugh every day. They love to hear stories about college and they have big dreams of becoming doctors, lawyers, nurses, police officers, architects, and video game designers.
My Project
My students have been working so hard to improve their reading levels this year. However, while we have books in our library, many are outdated or do not necessarily pique my student's interest. When I asked my students what books THEY would like to see in our classroom library, their jaws dropped.
Instantly I heard, "Diary of a Wimpy Kid! Junie B. Jones! May Bird!" They couldn't believe they had the choice of what they would like to have in their classroom library. They were thrilled at the idea of having books that they were interested in and that they were already excited about reading. For me, this means the difference between them casting reading aside as a boring activity and them immersing themselves in a book they love. Really, there is no better way to expand their education and their world. Reading exciting books encourages them to keep reading independently, to find more books, and to learn more about their world.
My students are already so excited about our "Library Renovation Project" that they ask me every day when we'll have new books.
They want to know what books we're getting and when they will be able to start reading them. For me, getting my students excited about reading now sets them up for success in all subjects and in future grades. For them, having new books generates excitement about reading and a passion for new literature that will stay with them forever.
