Books in Spanish and English help us to master English and improve our all of our subjects as well as our self-image and self-esteem.
We are located in rural Southeastern North Carolina. Our county has no large cities or industries. We are argicultulrally based and have factories that support our large farms. About 15% of our school population is Latin. We are a middle school with grades 6-8.
Many of our students are placed with us based on their age, and not their academic level. These students often have had little to no formal education in their home countries. They do not speak English, and naturally don't read English and often struggle to read in Spanish. Our ESL teacher and I work together to try and see that these students have materials to be able to learn in their first language (Spanish) and master their new language English.
We have found that the students enjoy the books that we would consider primary level. Books that cover basic concepts, colors, numbers, places, basic things we learn as a young child, but still need to be mastered in English. These books are clear, concise and printed with great graphics. The students love reading them. It's a highlight of my day to visit their class and have them read to me in English and me to them in Spanish, (they are very polite about my pronunciation).
We are asking the donors to help us obtain some more of these books, to aid our students in their growth. The students often ask to take these books with them to classes so they may study their language if they are lost in the class. The curriculum requires that all of the students attend all classes.
Donors have helped us provide bilingul books in the Language Arts classes. We have found that the teachers are grateful and the students like being able to do something productive. By being able to share these books, both students and teachers can grow and gain understanding of each other.
