This school year, I will be returning to the classroom (after 16 years) as a Bilingual Early Childhood Teacher with children between 3-5 years of age whose first language is Spanish. Our school serves students who qualify for special education services due to identified developmental delays and disabilities, children who have been identified as at-risk, and students who pay tuition to attend preschool.
As a Bilingual Early Childhood Teacher, I will strive to provide my students with a strong educational foundation that includes the advantages of learning two languages.
Some examples of the benefits of bilingualism include increased overall academic achievement as well as ability to communicate within their community, a sense of multiculturalism, and a greater tolerance and understanding for others.
As I eagerly anticipate returning to the classroom, I look forward to meeting my students and their families. As an Early Childhood Teacher, I know that many of my students are coming to school for the first time. I want to provide an environment that is positive and welcoming while meeting the academic and social/emotional needs of each child.
My Project
I am returning to the classroom full time after 16 years, thus I am starting over in regards to acquiring materials for my classroom. Because teachers provide so many of the items for their classroom by purchasing them with personal funds, teachers take these items with them when they leave. I would like to ensure that my new classroom contains the resources that my students need for learning and development and that those items stay with the program/classroom should I leave so that future students and teachers can benefit from them.
Early Childhood classrooms need to have a well-equipped environment so children have a variety of opportunities to develop language and literacy skills.
Providing a print-rich bilingual environment for my students that includes books, posters, and games in Spanish and English; will challenge students' minds as they acquire new vocabulary and early literacy skills while learning and having fun.
