Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach 11th and 12th grade students at LIFE Academy, one of the most diverse schools in Oakland.
Several years ago, I was taking a group of students hiking at Point Reyes. As we drove across the bridge into San Francisco, many of the students began to comment that it was the first time they had ever been across the Bay Bridge. They live in inner-city Oakland, and had never traveled those 12 miles. At that point, I decided that beyond the academic tools I could give the students in my classroom, it was equally important to expose students to the world outside of their neighborhood.
Over the past few years, another teacher and I have worked hard to build a cycling program at the school. We have slowly built a supply of mismatched bicycles for the students to ride. One year we were so desperate for bikes that we borrowed some from San Quentin. We have built the class into a program in which students read, learn mechanics skills, and go on rides throughout the Bay Area. At the end of the year, we take 30 students on an overnight trip to a hostel in the Marin Headlands and spend two days mountain biking around the Golden Gate Bridge and the San Francisco Bay. This trip is absolutely transformative for the students who never get “across the bridge” and opens their eyes to whole new worlds—a world of cycling, a world of exploration, and a world of discovery.
In the past the school has helped support our efforts by paying for the cost of the hostel. However, amid fiscal crisis, our district was taken over by the state, and the money is just not there. We have the bikes, the support of volunteers for the rides, and the support of students and their families. However, we lack the funds necessary to pay for the youth hostel.
