We have a very diverse population of students with varying levels of reading abilities. With 60% percent of our students being socio-economically disadvantaged and having limited to access to books, we do our best to keep current, engaging, multi-cultural books available for them.
We challenge our students to push themselves, whether it is to read more difficult books, sign up for honors classes, or to write their own stories, fan fiction, or even novels.
We host annual reading contests to encourage the habit and life-long love of reading.
My Project
We have most of our students on free and reduced lunch. Many of our families can't afford bicycles for their children. Many of our students walk to school. As motivation for students to challenge themselves and develop a lifelong love of reading, we hope to give away a bike to two students who read the most in our annual reading contest.
Not only will winning a bike reward two students, it will encourage all of our students to challenge themselves to read more than they have ever read before.
They will prove to themselves that they are capable readers. It will introduce them to the love of reading and create a habit of reading for pleasure which will serve them the rest of their lives in both college and career. As any reader knows, reading helps one live a healthy lifestyle as does the daily exercise of biking!
