Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
How many times have you seen a toddler point at what he wants? He generally crawls or walks to it, grabs the item and smiles. He has accomplished his task and is ready for more exploration. Now think about the child who just sits there and has to depend on an adult to get him everything he needs.
We are a special needs preschool who have included some typical developing children as role models.
These children are receiving an education as well as receiving their needed therapies at the same time. We accept children into our program ranging from two and a half to five years old. They are a fun loving group who will be raised knowing that differences are what makes our world so special.
My Project
Currently, we have some special needs children in our classroom who are not walking independently yet. In working with their physical therapist, some suggestions were made as to how we can help strengthen their large motor skills. Our typically developing students have displayed great role modeling skills and we would like to have each child reach their maximum potential.
We are a very small community.
Our resources are very limited and parents usually have to drive anywhere between 20 to 60 miles (or further) to have therapy access required for their children. By attending our preschool program and providing these children with the opportunities to develop their skills in all domains increases their chances at becoming successful members in society regardless of their abilities.
