The students I teach at Slidell High are eager to learn and experience the world and are wonderful kids to boot. It is my hope that I can acquire a computer for my classroom for students to use in order to give them a vital resource for learning. I am in my 5th year of teaching and 3rd year teaching World Geography and Economics. This proposal is for a laptop computer for students to use in class. Geography students could acces the computer for spontaneous questions or structured group work on topics such as Mt. Everest, the Holocaust, mapskills (map projections, physical maps, political maps), AIDS in Africa, environmental issues and US and world population patterns. Economics students would be able to research topics such as the Federal Reserve system, Wal-Mart and the nature of capitalism, scarcity and the problem of poverty as well as understand the nature of the stock market by tracking share prices and company news. Students will be taught how to analyze and filter search results from the internet. This skill directly addresses the Louisiana foundational skill of Problem Solving regarding thinking about information and deciding if it is important or not. Data collection and analysis is becoming an imortant job skill in today's competitve and technological workforce. The laptop will give students an outlet to the world that they may only occasionally get in the library or at home. They may even have some fun too!
