From Page to Stage: Bringing Learning to Life I teach multiple grade levels of English in CAPA, the Communication & Arts in Performance Academy, at our high school. We are a career & technical academy that serves as a school within a school to prepare students for college and beyond. The students learn theater, writing, speech, video production, fine arts, dance, choral performance, music, and more.

Each summer, the instructors get together and plan collaborative, interdisciplinary units that will excite and engage our students. We tie the curriculum in English, for example, to what we want to accomplish in theater and video production, science, dance, and fine art. This year, students will be performing pieces from "Big River" for the state competition. In order to provide invaluable background knowledge, inspiration, & historical perspective, we will study related novels. In 9th grade English, we will be reading "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer", breaking it into pieces, analyzing it, learning playwriting by transforming the pieces into scenes for the stage, and then performing them. Eleventh graders will read "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn", and do likewise. For an added bit of fun, we are planning a rain-gutter raft regatta in which students will be given some twine, art sticks, foam, and a little fabric to build themselves a mini-raft worthy of Tom & Huck. We will get two lengths of gutter side by side, filled with water, and have ourselves a breath-powered raft race!

Our students need to read the classics that inform theatrical productions. They need to realize that musical theater finds its inspiration not only from life, but from literature. In order to do that, we need novels, audio CDs, teaching materials, scores of the musical, and some craft supplies to make it memorable and fun.

With your help, we will take the "stuffy old classics" that kids groan over, and bring them to life in a colorful way both in the classroom and on the stage. Don't you wish your high school English teacher turned reading a novel into a playwriting workshop, rain-gutter regatta, and performance theater?
