Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The books featured in this project are destined for approximately 300 kids in 3rd through 5th grade. They are students at a K-8 center in South Florida. I run the school library. About 84% of my library patrons come from households with below average income. The kids tend to be first-generation Americans whose parents have recently arrived in the U.S. from the Caribbean, or from Central or South America. The children don't have access to a lot of juvenile literature at home.
Our fourth grade gifted kids are really into 'Big Nate' books: they have read the five titles we have and would go BANANAS if we were to acquire the 16 new 'Big Nate' titles in this project.
My Project
These 'Big Nate' books come from Follett School Solutions, a company that supplies books to school media centers: as such, they come with library barcodes and electronic records that can be uploaded to our catalog in seconds. They will not need to be processed when they arrive at our school. They can be circulated immediately. And they will be!
'Big Nate' is very much in vogue.
The Fourth graders will check them out first - it was fourth graders who suggested this project - and then, based on past form, the 'Big Nate' fashion will spread to our Third and Fifth grade readers. This project should have a very big impact.
Over time, hundreds of children will check these 'Big Nate' books out, practice their reading and become enthused about literature. Please do consider getting these 'Big Nate' books for our library. It would make the kids so happy.
