Big Movement, Small Space

Help me give my students a compact strider for a way to move their bodies without disrupting the class and while working!

My Students

I have an amazing group of 19 5th graders. They want to learn and I am trying to find creative ways for them to engage with our curriculum. As 5th graders, they are preparing to go to 6th grade and learning skills to be more independent, organized and responsible. This year we are working on many projects and creating portfolios to showcase our best work.

These kids are learning how to be invested in their own learning, as well as engaging with others in a way that prepares them for the world beyond elementary school.

This happens through group work, problem solving and lots of conversation. I am working hard to provide a space that promotes this kind of learning in our class.

My Project

Students have come back from being at home, by themselves to learning in a classroom with a bunch of other kids. There is a lot less opportunity for them to move around freely as they would at home. Ways of moving that work for students and don't completely disrupt the class are very hard to come by! Flexible seating is one of the ways I try to let students choose what is best for themselves and self regulate.

I have talked with several students in my class and we came up with this idea for a strider to help bodies that need to move be successful inside the classroom.

It is so great to see students understanding that different people need different things. This mini elliptical can be used under a desk to help focus, or as a larger movement item at a standing location for when students really need to get some bigger movement in.
