Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"If I have been able to see further, it was only because I stood on the shoulders of giants."~Sir Isaac Newton~
My students need to understand math and how to apply it in life. They must learn to stand on the giants to reach the dreams in their hearts. In our class, if you can dream it, you can do it!
I teach kindergarten through sixth grade students with learning disabilities, autism, emotional disturbance, and ADHD at a high poverty school in California.
My students come from a mix of homes including Hispanic, African American, military, and low socioeconomic. As a teacher of special education, my students come to my room to work on skills they need in order to flourish in the general education environment.
They require the high-paced, intensive intervention my room provides to help them to reach for the dreams in their heart. Most of my students are working one to three grade levels below their grade level and require very specific interventions in order for them to gain the skills necessary to be successful in the classroom and life.
My Project
I am requesting a Macbook Pro and trackpad. My students will be able to use the Macbook Pro to explore the exciting math site of Yummy Math, race students in other countries while identifying math facts, explore math concepts through various free websites, and research and write journal articles explaining the concepts and solutions they have learned.
They can then take the reports they have produced on the laptop and make a news' broadcast with iMovie on the Mac. The thrill of seeing themselves on the big screen will make the entire math process much more fulfilling and exciting. My students will learn how to express the hows and whys of math solutions both on paper and through speaking - a very important part of the Common Core.
A computer would provide limitless opportunities to a class like mine. It would serve as a motivator and resource, and it would provide meaningful interaction with a tool they will be expected to use in middle school, college, and beyond.
Technology, literacy, and math are synonymous with the 21st Century!
With the requested Macbook and trackpad my students will be using 21st Century tools to explore math, record observations, and create a video journal with iMovie. Your donation will be helping them to gain exciting new information and share it with their peers. Using tools that today's digital natives are familiar with, my students will stand on top of the shoulders of giants empowering them to reach for their dreams!!
