My students need picture books that allow them to practice their reading comprehension skills with books that are engaging and are not intimidating for struggling readers.
My students are fifth and sixth graders with endless potential! They are enrolled at an intermediate school in a rural district with a high poverty level. Many of these students do not have access to technology outside of school and lack the opportunities for many life experiences available to their peers.
The students in my classroom receive special education services daily and are identified as having learning disabilities.
They need frequent reinforcement of basic math, reading, and writing skills in order to make progress in the general curriculum.
My Project
Most of my students are struggling readers. They need picture books that are not intimidating with their length, but that can still be used to practice reading comprehension skills and gain ideas about what good writers do to get their ideas across to readers. Many of my students will shut down when asked to read a lengthy chapter book because they are scary and frustrating to students who struggle in reading. When given a picture book, these same students feel they can be successful because they can read the shorter book without fatigue from trying to figure out every word. Reading comprehension skills can be practiced using any length book, so I want to set my students up for success with beginning comprehension skills using books they are comfortable with and that have an uplifting message for young readers.
