My 2nd grade class is like many classes, anxious and in constant need to move. Our school is very diverse with many different cultures, languages and almost 50% receive free and reduced-priced lunch.
Many of my students do not have stability outside of the classroom.
When they enter our room I want them to know this is their second home - this is their place. They need that stability they lack outside of our room.
These are the most generous and thoughtful group of kiddos. Not only are they the sweetest and caring to myself but to each other. I want to be able to provide them with some exciting new tools in our room because they deserve it!
My Project
Having these tools in my students hands daily can help with their engagement and responsiveness to their thoughts and feelings. This can change a classroom community.
Students who feel validated, heard, and understood stand a much greater chance in success throughout their daily lives.
I hope with these tools we can change not only our classroom but help improve our school's sense of community. I want my 2nd graders to be confident in themselves that not only can they use these tools in our room but to share with others in their lives.
We will use the books continually through the year, but most importantly in the beginning weeks. Helping them build a growth mindset is critical for these young minds. Not only helping with growth mindset but being self aware with their emotions and knowing what is acceptable and not. Giving them more flexible seating will also help enhance engagement and work during their independent work time. This will also lead to confidence, a growth mindset, and independence.
