I have 25 sweet first-grade students. Next year, I will be looping and will begin by teaching Kindergarten and stay with them through First grade. My students are kindhearted and loving kids. They are also extremely hard working. They come to school each and every day ready to learn and with a smile on their face, as do I! Our school day can feel very long when you are only 6/7 years old, but these kids of mine soar through the day. They complete phonics, guided reading, math, writing, science, social studies, go to specials, lunch, recess, and still have energy to spare. They amaze me.
Unfortunately, our school is located within a high poverty district and many of my students do not have the resources that they need at their fingertips.
I do not want them to feel as though they deserve less than other districts may have. I want to ensure that they are set up for success.
My Project
Reading, Reading, Reading is key to success. Students need to be fully submerged in this. It’s important that they listen to books being read to them and also read them on their own. Next year I will be teaching Kindergarten and will loop with them through First grade. I want to be able to have the books that are grade level appropriate for them.
Listening to reading builds vocabulary development and makes a child's reading comprehension stronger.
I want to build our listening library and expose my kids to new books on a daily basis. I want my students to be able to clearly see the books that we are reading and enjoy them right alongside myself.
