Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are survivors! They literally come from all around the world. We are a Title I school which means we are located in a low-income neighborhood with many refugees and ELL students. We are part of the "No Excuse" program. This program is school-wide and helps promote the idea that there is no excuse as to why you cannot go to college. When someone says "they can't", the other students quickly shut them down by saying "you can". My class motto is "yes I can and I will".
With 24 languages spoken at our school, we strive to differentiate instruction to reach all students that need help with the new language.
As I start each year I know that the reading levels improve every year. Last year I had two students reading at a third grade level and most likely higher.
These students are pushing to reach higher expectations we set for them every year. My classroom is all about reading and pushing each other to reach higher and we celebrate success at all levels.
My Project
Shared reading has really been a big part of our literacy program. We use big books in first grade to really get our students involved and excited about reading.
Big books have always been in existence and we are really trying to push for more and more books in our library to make it easier to get our lessons done.
These lessons help us target what we are working on to achieve maximum results with the amount of time we have. Of course literacy plays a pivotal role in the success of all students and big books are what we need now.
