Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Big books are an interactive way to get beginning readers involved and excited about learning to read. My students love reading along with me as I read from big books because it provides an opportunity for them to practice reading strategies with the support of their teacher and their peers.
The students at my school have been selected through a lottery system after their families have filled out an application to attend.
Many of the public schools in the surrounding area in which my school is located do not provide the students in the community with the education they deserve. However, at the school in which I work, our goal is to give all students the opportunity to reach their full potential. In my Kindergarten classroom, I have the most wonderful group of achievers who are so eager and excited to learn each day.
My Project
Through the use of these big books, I will be able to engage in more Shared Reading experiences with my students. Shared Reading is an essential component of literacy instruction that allows students to practice decoding and reading comprehension strategies with the support of the teacher and their peers before being expected to independently attempt the strategies in their own reading. Through the use of big books during Shared Reading, I can model specific reading strategies that I would like my students to eventually use in their own reading. My students can see first hand how strategies such as checking your picture to help you figure out a difficult word and looking through the whole word to the end. They can make predictions about the story which can aide in fluency and comprehension when reading any text. If my students are able to practice these strategies with me using a Big Book, it sets them up for greater success when reading independently.
I have already exhausted my Big Book supply in my classroom and if you support this project I will receive more Big Books for Shared Reading.
This will allow me to continue to help my students become better readers. Practice makes perfect and without these big books my students will not have the opportunity to thoroughly practice the skills that are so crucial to their success as readers!
