This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I currently teach kindergarten in an urban New York charter school. I am somewhat new to the teaching profession and big books are very expensive, though highly effective tools for teaching literacy. This year I will be in a new classroom, lacking some of the supplies needed to provide memorable and meaningful lessons to my students.
Many of my kindergarten students will be stepping into a classroom for the first time in their lives this September. They have the opportunity to build strong learning habits and I'd like your help to inspire in them a lifelong love of reading.
Modeling the habits of good readers, and involving children in making meaning through dramatic readings and discussions are integral parts of a strong literacy curriculum. These big book theme packets, which include classic children's literature and materials to help bring the stories to life, would be a wonderful asset in the classroom as well as across the grade level. I will certainly share the books with colleagues in order that they can help as many students as possible, both this year and for many to come.
Your help will ensure that my students have high quality, hands-on experiences with literature, and will help them on their way to becoming avid readers!
