This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are inquisitive first-graders from a diverse Title I public elementary school in Philadelphia. Many students come from the immediate neighborhood, but some come from other parts of the city, just to attend our school.
First graders are our future world leaders, energetic and eager to learn through discovery.
They love acquiring knowledge about a variety of subjects and enjoy discussing what they observe. They thrive when they are exploring and creating in small groups with their classmates. My students find the world around them fascinating and are eager and open to any challenge presented to them.
My Project
My first graders love to read big books with a buddy! They use pointers, to help read to one another, at our special big book cart.
This is a fun activity my students can do independently and provides the practice they need to become fluent readers.
The variety of topics and stories is engaging to students and motivates them to read book after book.
The sets of big books come at different levels to meet the needs of the various readers I have in my classroom. My students love to help each other read and discuss what the story is about.
