This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
"Brown Bear, Brown Bear what do you see?" My 27 kindergarten students love Brown Bear. They love to chant along with the words on the page, but they can't see the words on the book pages. My students are missing vital opportunities for developing concepts about print and learning to read.
Every morning I have the honor of working with 27 diverse wiggling learners.
I love the children in my classroom, which for some is the only love they receive. More than 90% of the children in my room receive free or reduced lunch. Many have parents who are struggling to provide the basics. The only chance of learning these children get are when they walk through the doors of our school building Monday through Friday. Shouldn't they get the best? Shouldn't they be taught how to overcome the odds against them?
My Project
I am requesting BIG book copies of our favorite authors and characters. These big book copies will allow every child to:
-See David running down the street naked in the book "NO David"
-See and match the repetitive text in the "Gingerbread Man", "Brown Bear Brown Bear What Do You See?", "Panda Bear Panda Bear What Do You Hear"
- Study the way the author makes her own paper to recycle in the stories "In the Small Small Pond" and "In the Tall Tall Grass"
-Learn to add details in their own writing by studying the details that these authors have used
-Learn how books open, who the author is, who the illustrator is, that text is read left to right
-Learn new words that they can go and read in other books
These six books will open up the world of reading and writing for 27 low income children!
Your donation will allow these children to become the next great American Writer, provide high interest reading experiences that instill the love of reading in them, and carry each child to become something great regardless of the odds stacked against them. Thank you for your consideration!
