"Peanut Butter, Peanut Butter, Jelly, Jelly!" This simple children's rhyme has inspired my 25 Kindergartners to open their minds to the world of literature. However, we are in need of more Big Books for our classroom, especially those that incorporate rhythm and rhyme.
My Kindergartners attend a KIPP elementary school in Texas, which is a national network of free, open-enrollment college-preparatory public schools with a track record of preparing students in under-served communities for success in college in life.
My Kindergartners love to read and learn, and are busy preparing each and every day to "climb the mountain" to college and beyond.
My Project
My students will be excited and motivated to learn to read with our new Big Books! We requested Big Books that include multicultural characters who look just like my students do, and who come from different countries and backgrounds. We also requested Big Books that keep us energized; we love to sing and dance, while learning at the same time! With these Big Books, students will be able to learn the fundamental skills of reading - they will learn letters, words, sentences, and punctuation; be able to track print using a pointer; use post-its to capture their thoughts and ideas on the page; and act out stories using their imagination. We also requested a Big Book storage stand so that we can keep our brand new materials neat and organized.
These Big Books will both inspire and motivate students to learn to read.
Donations to this project will go directly to student materials that will be used during independent work station time, and during whole group learning time. Thank you for giving the power of a story to a great group of Kindergartners!
