Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a first grade teacher. Unfortunately I do not have the materials I need to be able to teach my class well. One of the things we could use best is big books. We gather together on the mat and read aloud together. We share the text of a book whose illustrations and print are big enough for all to see. We use this to study words, understand literature, talk about a story, notice beginning letters, word family words, spelling patterns, word endings, how the picture supports the text and gives us clues- the essence of the skills needed to become readers. Because I do not have enough big books to prompt all these skills, I substitute with charts I have written myself. This does not really work because they do not have the form of a book, they cannot make predictions of what will come next, they do not have the illustrations that support the text and enable logical predictions. It does not lend itself to the discussion of literature. The Wright Group has many big book packs that would be very helpful to my class. The print is large and more easily decoded. The illustrations are clear and bright and are a natural prompt to the emergent reader. I am hoping someone will donate appropriate big books to our class to help us learn all these invaluable reading skills.
