I work with a diverse group of first grade students. My students represent various cultures and educational abilities. But there is one thing my students all share- the love of reading! I enjoy sharing stories, texts, songs, poems with my students to teach reading, writing, math, science and social studies skills. My students enjoy having the chance to read all sorts of genre along with writing their own creations inspired by the expansive number of books I have worked hard to include in my classroom library. The children love being "teacher" and getting the chance to read aloud to their peers or share what they have learned. We spend a lot of time building a community of readers throughout the year and I love seeing the children's smiles when they discover they have become a more developed reader or even a new reader!!
My Project
I love to read and I love to teach children to become readers! In my classroom we spend time with stories, big books, mentor texts and a my classroom library full of fiction and nonfiction books.
I love to spend time with Big Books and use them to teach reading, grammar, writing and social/emotional skills.
However, Big Books are BIG and are difficult to share without an easel. My current easel was self built with plastic piping, however, it doesn't always stay standing and is difficult to manage. I like to have my students also use the easel when they are "teaching" the book or even independently re-reading a Big Book.
I would love the help in paying for this sturdy piece of classroom furniture to use for many years to come!
