Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This school year I will have the opportunity to teach the same group of students I had in Kindergarten. We have grown into a tight knit family. By teaching the same group of students I will be able to further enhance and develop their learning potential because I already know where they are at academically.
My students are mostly Spanish-speaking and are all on the free lunch program. My students love reading. I truly believe that the love of reading is the foundation for all future learning. Being able to read is what allows my students to have access and opportunities to higher learning.
This past year, at my new school, I had a difficult time having the students experience being read to using big books because we did not have a book easel. One student would have to help me hold the book and another would turn the page. I want all of my students to be sharing the experience of great literature. I want all of my students to be able to participate and learn from the experience.
Big books allow all the students to participate in the phonics lessons, to listen to a fluent reader, to read in chorus, to identify patterns and sight words, to see the text, and to identify story characteristics. The learning that goes along with the big book reading experience is essential in the primary grades. By having an easel, I will be better able to ensure that all my students receive this foundation in reading, through readings, and by reading.
