Save our Big Books! Our Big Books have become such a blunder. They are disorganized from being stored in a plastic tub and torn from not being put away properly.
I teach first grade at a Title 1 school serving predominately military dependents and children learning English as a second language.
Many of my students have a least one parent currently deployed overseas and most have moved frequently throughout their short lives.
My Project
Would you believe that I am keeping my precious Big Books in a plastic tub? They become unorganized bent and torn from years of love and usage. Some of these big books are bent and folded on every single page from being placed in a tub that cannot protect them from wear and tear. They are an important part of my teaching from year to year. We will spend a few days reading each big book. Then, I put the book in the plastic tub for my students to use and sometimes they can't even find it because there are so many piled on top of each other. My students love to read these books over and over again and again and this rereading is critical to their reading growth. Many of these books are math and science based as well and the children love to tell me what important information they have learned. If only we had a decent place to organize and store them, I could continue this program for years and years!
I am requesting a "kid friendly" wood big book holder so that my students will continue to be able to access our class big books.
Because of the wear and tear that my books have endured in a plastic tub, the books are on their last leg. They cost upwards from $25 each and cannot be replaced. Without this big book holder, I will be unable to allow my students access to this invaluable learning tool. Please help us. We need it!
